With 32 managers aboard, we are ready to embark on the 2023-24 season. Let’s start off with the key offseason dates ahead:
June 28 – IRL NHL Entry Draft begins
July 1 – IRL NHL free agency begins
July 2 – KPD deadline to acquire and tag a pending UFA, deadline to extend a player hitting UFA after 2023-24 or beyond (up to 3 years at 1.5x cap hit)
July 3-4 – FanTrax and Google Sheet cleanup/turnover completed
July 5 – KPD NHL Entry Draft begins
July 8 - Team tag bidding begins
July 15 – KPD free agency begins, starting exclusively with forwards
July 22 – Bidding commences for defensemen
July 29 – Bidding commences for goalies
And now for the memos:
League Buy-in
- The league entry fee is now $55 USD
- This fee is not owed by the Calgary Flames for the 2023-24 season, given their current state
- Full payment of your buy-in is expected by July 5
Prizes
The premium league FanTrax fee was a little over $4 per team ($130 total), meaning we have $50 allocated toward the prize pool from each team for a total of $1,550. Going forward, I am incorporating a more significant reward for regular season success (previous iterations awarded less than the buy-in for division titles, for example).
Stanley Cup Champion $750
Stanley Cup Runner-up $300
Eastern Conference Runner-up $75
Western Conference Runner-up $75
Presidents’ Trophy Winner $125
Three other division winners $75 (x3)
TOTAL $1,550
Salary Cap
The KPD salary cap for 2023-24 will align with the NHL’s, which is currently projected to be $83.5 million. Teams can exceed the salary cap by 10 percent ($8.35M) during the offseason. This will be strictly enforced and is why we’re going back to staggering forwards, D-men and goalies.
Teams must be compliant on the opening night of the NHL season.
Regular Season Schedule
I continue to have zero interest in spending time adjusting the schedule on a weekly basis. The regular season will consist of five matchups per week over 19 periods, concluding on Feb. 18.
The trade deadline will be 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, January 21.
Playoff Schedule
Each round of the playoffs, going forward, will be a two-week matchup. The 2024 postseason will commence on Monday, Feb. 19. The KPD Cup Final will conclude on April 11.
Salary Retention
We are increasing the max retention from 40 to 50 percent, which matches the current NHL rule. However, we will continue to cap the retention on a single player at two seasons, as anything longer than that could be a major deterrent if we needed to replace an owner.
The maximum amount of retained salary by a team is 15 percent of the salary cap, and the max number of active retention spots per season is three players.
New Owner Amnesty Buyout
In lieu of buying out a player’s contract, any new owner could also choose to wipe up to two seasons of salary retention off their books – including the option to wipe a single season off the books from two different players.
