Hello everyone,
Team Tag bidding begins Monday, August 2 at 10:00 AM EST. I have gone and created a thread for each tagged player in the free agency folder. Please remember we have made an alteration the team tagging rule on matching the winning bid on your team tagged player. Please see the below rules about team tagging. Let me know if you have any questions!
At the conclusion of each KPD Stanley Cup Final, teams will be allowed a Team Tag. The Team Tag will be the only tag in KPD.
The bidding will be done as its own, separate week from all other UFA bidding. It will occur before all UFA bidding in the offseason. The bidding will be open, as usual, and all normal bidding rules will apply. When a high bid stands for 24 hours, there is a decision to be made.
Any player whose contract expires as a UFA at the end of the season must go to UFA and will be a free agent and eligible for Free Agency. For the 2020-21 season, that means that any player whose contract expires at the end of the 2020-21 season is eligible for a Team Tag.
Each team will receive one (1) team tag per season. Only players eligible for Free Agency at seasons end are eligible to be tagged.
A UFA that is tagged goes through the normal bidding process as an UFA, after a bid stands for 24 hours, the tagging team has the option to either match the new contract, or pass on the new contract. Passing on the new contract will awarded said player to the new team.
For example: Alex Ovechkin is a UFA after the 2020-21 season. The KPD Washington Capitals owner decides to Team Tag Ovechkin following the KPD Stanley Cup Final. Ovechkin goes through the bidding process where the KPD New York Rangers win the bid with a 6-year $100.00M contract.
As the original team tagging Ovechkin, the Capitals owner can either accept the contract, thus owning Ovechkin for the next 6 years at a total of $100.00M, or passing on the deal, allowing The New York Rangers to now own Ovechkin's rights.
As the team tagging a UFA, you are not allowed to bid on your own tagged player. However, if you choose to match the highest bid on your tagged player, you can pay a 10% fee on top of total contract value to restructure the deal.
No more than 3 years can be added to the contract signed by the other team and the max the the contract can last for is 6 years total... Players over 35 no more than 3 years as outlined in the rules for signing a UFA.
Example:
Capitals tag Alex Ovechkin. The Bruins then sign Ovechkin for 1 year @ 12M.
The Capitals accept the contract and after the 10% restructure fee the total contract value becomes 13.2M. This can be divided however the Capitals would like.
4 years x $3.3M = $13.2m total
3 years x $4.4M = $13.2m total
2 years x $6.3 = $13.2m total
Because the contract was signed for one year and you can not restructure for more than three years, Washington could not restructure this into a 5 or 6 year contract.
There is no return compensation to a team who loses a Team Tagged player.
The tagging team will have 48 hours FROM WHEN A COMMISSIONER POSTS ON THE THREAD to make a decision to match or decline the highest bid. If no decision is made within those 48 hours, you will lose the player.
If no bid is placed on the tagged player after 72 hours of posting, the player can be returned to the tagging team at whatever contract term they would like, and at a 150% annual cap hit increase (standard contract min/max applies).
Each team will receive 1 Team Tag per season. Only players entering Unrestricted Free Agency can be tagged. You can not trade a team tag.
The player(s) that your team designates for a Team Tag MUST be acquired by your team no later than that season's KPD trade deadline.
